Faq's About earthworm care

Q: [FAQ Question] Help!  I've got ants in my worm bed. How do I get rid of them?
A: [FAQ Answer]Removing ants from worm beds can be tricky.  You don't want to apply pesticide, since this will also kill your worms.  You'll probably have to sift your worms out of the infected bedding and put them into new bedding.  Preventing ants from getting into your worm bed is the first place is much easier.
To prevent ants from infecting your worm bed:
  • Make sure your worm bedding doesn't dry out,
  • Don't overfeed your worms,
  • Deep area around the worm bed clear of debris.

To keep ants from crawling into the bed:
  • If your worm bed is off the ground with legs, coat around the legs with Vaseline a few inches from the bottom;
  • If your worm bed sitting on the ground, consider putting a base under it or coat around the bottom with the Vaseline. The ants won't crawl through it.
Ants are a serious problem, especially fire ants. You need to get them out of the bedding pronto. Prevention is the key and remember to be very careful with pesticides. You can spray around the bedding area if you have to, but keep it out of your worm bed.

Keeping the area free of debris is probably the best prevention, the ants don't have a place to hide, they aren't attracted in the first place, and you can see them before the get into your bed.

Good luck!
